How To Go To The Masters

The Masters

Written by: Bill Hogan

Attending The Masters Tournament is a bucket-list experience for golf enthusiasts and sports fans alike. Held annually at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, this iconic event is renowned for its challenging course, storied history, and the beautiful backdrop of blooming azaleas.

Securing tickets to The Masters is no simple feat, as the demand far exceeds the availability. In this article, we will guide you through the various methods to obtain tickets, the challenges associated with each option, and some tips to enhance your chances of experiencing this world-class tournament in person.

Method One: The Masters ticket lottery

To attend the Masters Tournament, the most common method is through the Augusta National Ticket Lottery. This lottery grants applicants the opportunity to purchase tickets rather than providing tickets directly. Applications open on June 1st and a random selection process is used to determine who can buy tickets for tournament rounds, priced at $115 each. Practice round tickets are $75.

The odds of securing a ticket through this lottery are approximately 1 in 200, or 0.55%. The application window for the 2025 Masters Tournament has closed, but you can prepare for future years by setting a reminder to apply on the official Masters website.

Method Three: Be a badge Patron ( or become friendly with one!)

Access to Masters series badges is exclusive and typically limited to Augusta Club members; the waiting list for these badges closed in 1978 and briefly reopened in 2000 before permanently shutting down. Possession of these badges is essential for attendance; their scarcity adds to their desirability, with their exact number unknown.

Badge Patrons who manage to secure these coveted items must still pay $450 for the four tournament days (usually Thursday to Sunday). They guarantee entry, eliminating the uncertainty of a lottery system.

Method Four: Qualify as a PGA Professional

PGA Professionals have the privilege of requesting a ticket for personal use at the Masters Tournament, a benefit exclusive to them. This access is part of the perks associated with PGA affiliation, which also includes entry to all PGA-owned events and certain Allied Association events. While this avenue provides direct access for PGA Professionals, it remains limited to a specific subset within the golf community.

How are Masters tickets normally distributed?

The primary way for the public to attend the Masters is through a lottery system. The application window for the 2025 Masters Tournament tickets spans three weeks, opening on June 1 and closing on June 21. Due to the high demand and low odds, applicants often submit for years without success.

Each person can only apply once and must use their primary residential address, being at least 21 years old. Winners are notified in September and can purchase up to four practice-round tickets and two tournament-round tickets. Tickets are mailed in March and are only valid for the specified year; purchases are non-refundable.

Should you buy second-hand Masters tickets?

Acquiring Masters tickets through means other than the official lottery does not ensure availability and can come at a significant cost, with series badges starting at a minimum of $6,000.

Purchasing second hand tickets is strictly prohibited; sellers caught doing so face permanent expulsion from the lottery, while buyers risk being escorted off the grounds.

Although reselling Masters tickets is legal in many states, it is illegal in Georgia, and selling within 2,700 feet of Augusta National gates is considered illegal ticket scalping under state law.
