Jasper Park Golf Course History

Stanley Thompson, aka “the Toronto Terror,” was a genius in golf course architecture. Canada’s most prolific golf course designer’s career was unfortunately cut short at age 59. By then he had already designed almost 200 courses, acted as a mentor to Robert Trent Jones Sr. whom he was partners with from 1932-40 and co-founded the American Association of Golf Course Architects with Jones and Donald Ross in 1948.

His philosophy of allowing the ebb and flow of the land to influence and direct his designs played particularly well in the many Canadian National Parks where he built courses. Nowhere more so than his crowning achievement The Jasper Park Golf Course that opened in 1925.

Thompson was a perfectionist and it took more than 50 teams of horses and 200 men a year just to clear the landscape for his routing. In 1945 the routing, although not his hole designs, was rerouted to give it a more traditional out and back circular pattern with the 9th green the farthest from the clubhouse.

Then in 1994, his original routing was restored using his original plans from 1924. The elevated tee boxes, dramatic bunkering, and wide fairways routed through the trees were also reestablished to recreate his fundamental vision. The course is challenging enough playing without the distracting breathtaking scenery and mountain backdrops that were also expertly incorporated in his initial layout.
