Ocean Course

Ocean Course

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort is a masterpiece of golf course design, created by legendary architects Pete and Alice Dye. Opened in 1991, the course was designed to challenge even the most experienced golfers while showcasing the natural beauty of the Carolina coastline.

The course stretches over 7,800 yards and is heavily influenced by the strong coastal winds that make every round a unique challenge. With wide, sweeping fairways that lead to greens protected by deep bunkers, saltwater marshes, and natural dunes, shot-making precision is paramount.

The back nine, particularly the closing stretch of holes along the ocean, delivers some of the most dramatic and challenging moments in golf. Holes like the 17th, a par-3 over water with the roaring ocean just beyond the green, and the perilous 18th, with its elevated tee shot and treacherous approach, leave players battling both the course and the elements.

The Ocean Course is rumored to have the most seaside holes in the Northern Hemisphere, with eight of them hugging the Atlantic. Some of the ground was even artificially raised at the course to maintain the unrivaled sea view. This is a spectacular bucket list destination.

Ocean course Hole 17

Premier Golf’s Favorite Hole

No 17 (Par 3)

Hole 17 is one of those holes that’ll make you stop and take in the view, but don’t let it throw you off. First thing: check the wind. The wind can mess with your club choice, so if it’s blowing into you, you’ll need an extra club—think 4-iron or hybrid. If it’s at your back, maybe stick with a 5-iron or 6-iron.

Aim for the center of the green. The water and bunkers around the green are no joke, and the wind can easily push your ball into trouble. If you’re in the bunkers, don’t panic, just focus on a solid bunker shot and avoid overshooting.

And remember, don’t go for the pin if it’s tucked behind the bunkers—just get it on the green and two-putt for par. The green slopes subtly, so take your time reading the putt.
