The Players Championship, although not a major, is often regarded as the next most prestigious golf tournament on the golfing calendar. The annual competition began in 1974 and was originally known as the Tournament Players Championship.
A firm fan favorite on the PGA Tour, the tournament once offered the highest purse of any tournament in golf and continues to be a much-loved event for players and spectators alike. Held in March every year, The Players golf tournament boasts a strong field of players, making it one of the toughest competitions to win.
With a permanent home at The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, The Players Tournament has an unrivaled relationship with the sport and its fans. Even the stadium itself was built with pros and fans in mind, ensuring the overall on-site fan experience was accessible and vastly improved from the viewing areas historically found on championship courses.
The challenging course at TPC Sawgrass makes for exhilarating spectating, with accuracy from the tee demanded from the very first hole.
“I always look forward to The Players Championship. We all approach it as if it’s a Major Championship. It’s our championship. It’s really cool and on such an incredible golf course, one of the best in the world.”
Jordan Speith
It started with Jack Nicklaus’ victory in 1974 and it’s easy to see why it’s become such a popular event on the PGA Tour. The Players Championship has a reputation of leading to further success, with five players having won The Players and a major championship in the same year: Jack Nicklaus (1978, The Open), Hal Sutton (1983, The PGA Championship), Tiger Woods (2001, The Masters), Martin Kaymer (2014, The U.S. Open), and Cameron Smith recently (2022, The Open).
The Players Championship is regarded as one of the best events in golf. Since the inaugural event took place in 1974, the buzz created at The Players makes it simply one of the best tournaments to witness.
Memorable in every golf fan’s minds is when Tiger Woods hit his “better than most” putt onto the 17th hole, bringing him to take his 26th win in 2001.
The Players Championship will be held from March 11-17, 2025, at TPC Sawgrass. The detailed schedule includes:
Monday, March 11: Practice rounds.
Tuesday, March 12: Practice rounds.

You can golf all year round at the award-winning TPC Sawgrass. Here, passionate golf fans can walk in the footsteps of their heroes and get the chance to play like a pro. With two courses, The Players Stadium Course and Dye’s Valley Course, golfers are able to take their pick depending on their skill level and have the experience of a lifetime.
Dye’s Valley Course allows golfers of all levels to experience The Players’ mindset. Designed by legendary architects, Pete Dye, Bobby Weed and Jerry Pate, water hazards are a significant part of this play, lining most holes and giving a forced carry, similar to that of its famous neighboring course.
At TPC Sawgrass, you can also take advantage of the personal forecaddies available to educate golfers on the history, and heritage of these incredible courses. For most, a visit to Sawgrass is for The Players Stadium Course, which is not only memorable for the tournament itself but for the famous par-3 17th-hole. Known as
the ‘Island Green’, this hole is arguably one of, if not the most famous hole in golf. It’s a mere 137-yard shot and if missed short, long, left or right, the odds are not in your favor as the ball heads into the surrounding water. You can even hit the green and find the water.

The Players Championship is an annual tournament of the PGA tour but isn’t considered one of the four major championships. However, it is often referred to as the unofficial 5th major, due to the strength of the field (including the top 50 globally ranked players), the prestige of the trophy, the prize money available, and the golf course the TPC Sawgrass, designed by Pete Dye, is considered to be a balanced course with a very challenging 17th hole.
The Players is held at the Stadium Course, TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, near Jacksonville, Florida each spring. Spectators can attend as part of a Premier Golf Players package.
Qualification for the Players Championship is achieved through several routes, primarily being a top-ranked player in the world. In most cases, players must be PGA Tour members to compete, and meet the criteria of being in the top 125 of the Fedex Cup Points standing, being in the top 50 officially world-ranked players, or have played well in the PGA tour in the past and are eligible to play again.
The 2024 Players Championship has a $20 million purse, which is the second highest on the PGA Tour. The winner receives $3.6 million from this prize pool, which ensures that competition is fierce among the players.
